New In Town
Take Back The Night
April. One of my favorite months. Spring break is next week, and I have no plans but to relax and take a break from school and waking up at six every morning. Sounds fine by me!
"Aubrey!" Harry almost runs me over as he runs up to me in the halls. He panting, like he just ran here from Mexico!
"What?" I question, putting my hands on his shoulders.
"Gran is sick, I have to get to London." He says, holding his stomach while he tries to catch his breath.
"Oh my God, what's wrong? Is she going to be okay?" My breath hitches.
"I don't know, my aunt just called me, I need to go." He repeats.
"Okay, calm down," I try to sooth him. "Let's get home and try to find a flight. It's going to be expensive because it's spring break. Everyone's going somewhere" I inform him.
"I don't give a fuck!" He grips his hands in his hair. "Sorry, I just need to get there." He apologizes, and I know he is sincere.
Thankfully it's Friday and school had just ended so we can get home. I was relieved to start spring break off with maybe a party or something, but now I know that's not going to be the case. Poor Harry, he would be devastated if he lost gran... I would be devastated. She is such a wonderful woman, and has been the only family that is really there for him.
"Alright there's one for tomorrow at seven in the morning. Should I book it?" I tell Harry who's pacing around his room as I search for flights on his Mac.
"Is there two?"
"One at two? Don't you want to leave as early as possible?" I ask.
"No Aubrey, I mean two tickets." He snaps. "You'll come with me, right?" His tone softens and he sits down next to me.
"If you want? Don't you think you need space?"
"No, I actually think it will be better if you're there." He explains as he looks at me. When I look up at him he breaks the eye contact and looks down at his hands. "If something happens to her..." He chokes up. "I need you there."
"I'll come, if that's what you want." I tell him reassuringly as I rub his back.
I book two tickets and try to comfort him. There's no word on his gran, and Harry has been restless. He refuses to eat, sleep, or do anything other than pace around his bedroom until he hears from someone back in London. I, however, think it's good. Gran is probably doing well, and I'm worried that if he gets a call, it will be bad news.
The next morning Harry and I are on our way to London. He's barely said anything since he got the call from his aunt telling him that gran was in the hospital, and I'm really worried about him. I keep telling him everything will be alright, but he's stubborn and refuses to take a deep breath. It's frustrating for me to see him like this, but I know he can't help it, he's just worried. Gran is a big part of his life, and I know I just need to be there for him.
Harry's aunt Amelia picks us up from the airport, and Harry finally talks in full sentences when he presses her for answers.
"What happened? Is she okay? Take us to the hospital!" He says frantically as we load out bags in the trunk of Amelia's black escalade.
"Harry, calm down sweetie, she's okay. She was severely dehydrated and fell down the stairs out back to the garden. She's still in the hospital, but she will be fine." Amelia explains calmly to him. "How are you two?" She smiles and pulls me into a hug after embracing her nephew.
"Better once you take us to the damn hospital!" Harry snaps.
"Harry!" I say trough clenched teeth and grip his arm.
Amelia shoots me an appreciative smile and drives out of the terminal.
"She'll be okay, Harry." Amelia says softly and rests her hand on his shaking knee.
"Can you just drive faster?" I can't see his face, but I know he's shutting his eyes, trying to wake up from this nightmare. I know this is one of his worst fears, living so far away from gran and having something like this happen.
I lean as far up as I can in my seatbelt and rub his shoulders from behind him the backseat. He lifts his right hand and takes mine from his shoulder, bringing it up to his mouth to kiss the back of my palm before squeezing it tightly.
"Okay, she's on the fourth floor, room 19. You need to stay calm, she's very tired and needs rest. But I'm sure she'll love to see you both." Amelia informs us as she drops us off at the front entrance to the hospital in London.
"Thank you Amelia." I thank her for the both of us. Harry is already out of the car.
"Of course, call me when you're done and I'll come pick you guys up." She smiles and I nod. "Thanks for coming with him, Aubrey, I know this is a lot for him, but you really are keeping him much calmer than he would be if you weren't here."
"Aubrey!" Harry shouts to me from outside and I smile at Amelia. It felt nice to hear that.
"Let's go!" He rushes me and I roll my eyes, but decide not to say anything. I know he's just eager to see his grandmother and is taking all of his stress out on me. I can't take it personally.
He takes my hand and holds it tight as we walk into the building. A shiver runs through my body as we enter. I've never liked hospitals, there just so cold and make me feel sad.
We get onto the elevator and Harry presses the 'four' button and we wait in silence as the doors slide shut.
"I can't lose her." Harry whispers when we start going up. I look at him to see his eyes closed, and my heart breaks. I wish I could make him feel better.
"You're not going to, Harry. You heard Amelia, she's fine, she just needs some rest." I wrap my arm around his waist and rest my head on his shoulder.
"Yeah but she's in the fucking hospital. She shouldn't be here." He runs his hands through his hair.
"Harry, it'll be okay." I try to calm him down.
"No, she shouldn't be living alone. She can't take care of herself!" He almost yells and then curses under his breath. Thankfully the doors slide open so I can escape the suffocating elevator.
We find our way to room 19, and Harry's hand squeezes mine tight, but I don't think he notices.
"I can't do this." He stops as I push the door open.
"Yes you can, come on. She's okay." I persuade him and he nods.
"Gran?" Harry asks and she slowly turns to face us in the hospital bed. She looks skinnier than the last time I saw her, and pale.
"Oh Harry! And Aubrey! You guys didn't have to come! I'm fine!" She smiles and I can't help but smile myself. She's such a strong woman.
I see Harry loosen up a bit now that he's seen her alright. He walks over to the bed and leans down to kiss her cheek, and then I take my turn.
She tells us what happened and she keeps reassuring Harry that she's fine, and if it was up to her she wouldn't be staying in the hospital. Harry sits on the bed next to her and holds her hand. I beautiful sight, I think to myself.
"Darling, why don't you take Aubrey back to the house an get some rest. I'm fine, really!" She tells Harry.
"No it's fine." He tells her.
"Harry, do it for me? You flew all this way, I don't want you to be stuck in a hospital room the whole time. Why don't you go hang out with the boys or relax at home?"
She convinces him and he takes a minute to finally agree.
"Okay, but we're coming back first thing tomorrow. Are you sure you're okay?" He asks and she smiles and nods.
"Now get out of here!" She laughs and we both hug her before leaving.
"What are you thinking?" I sit down on the bed next to Harry. He hasn't said anything since we left the hospital and Amelia picked us up.
"I'm..." He takes a moment. "I'm better." He forced a smile. "I'm just glad she's okay. And that you're here with me. Thanks, Aubrey. I know I've been an ass, I was just-"
"I know, you don't have to apologize." I cut him off. "It's good to see you smile again. Now you should call Louis, I think that's exactly what you need, to hang out with your friends."
"I think so too." He says and kisses my cheek.
After I suggested that Harry should call Louis, he did and Louis was more than excited to hear his friend was back in the city. He told us the guys were over and that we should come. We accepted the invitation and headed on over to Louis'.
"Haz! I heard about gran, sorry mate." Louis says sincerely as he greets Harry with a hug.
"She's doing better, but thanks." Harry says and moves aside so I can hug Louis.
"Aubrey, it's good to see you again." Louis smiles. "I'm surprised you still tolerate the lad!" He laughs and I punch his shoulder.
"Gee, thanks, Lou." Harry fakes hurt and laughs.
"I'm just messing with ya! Come downstairs, Liam's here, and I think Niall and Zayn are coming later." Louis informs us as we follow him to the stairs.
Liam is sitting on the couch on his phone, and he doesn't even notice us come down before Harry jumps on top of him.
"What's up Liam." Harry says casually.
"Get off of me Harry." Liam snaps.
Harry quickly follows his request and looks at Louis like what the fuck? Louis shrugs and mouths 'I have no idea.'
"Sorry, just got excited to see ya." Harry tries to apologizes.
"It's fine. How are you holding up?" Liam stands up to hug him.
"Better. What's going on around here?" Harry replies.
"Nothing at all. We were thinking of getting food, wanna come with?" Liam says. "Oh I didn't even see you, Aubrey! Come here!" He motions towards me and I walk up to give him a hug.
"Hey Liam!" I smile. "And yes we'll come with, I'm starving and Harry hasn't eaten since yesterday." I glare at my boyfriend. He needs to eat.
"Perfect! I'll drive." Louis exclaims and we follow him to his car.
We end up at some pub down the street from Louis'.
"So how is Harry holding up?" Liam asks. Harry and Louis left us at the table to go shoot pool at the billiards table.
"He's better, he was a wreck yesterday though. I've never seen him like that. So vulnerable."
"Yeah, he's really close with gran. But I think if you weren't here, he'd be a lot worse. He's not the best at dealing with his emotions." Liam tells me and I blush. Hearing similar things from Amelia and now Liam make me glad. I like that I have been able to keep Harry in control.
"How are you and Harry though? Still okay?" Liam asks me after taking a sip of his water.
"Good. Really good." I smile. "How is Danielle?"
"Oh, um... We broke up the other day." He looks down and starts ripping his napkin into tiny pieces, avoiding eye contact.
"Liam! Are you okay? What happened?" I rest my hand on his wrist to comfort him. He looks gutted.
"I'm fine... Well I will be. She said 'it just wasn't working.'" He says using air quotes. "Bullshit." He mutters.
"I am so sorry!" My mouth is wide open. They were so happy together. And I loved Danielle, she was so sweet when we hung out during Christmas break.
"It's fine, really." He reassures me and looks at my hand. I pull it away realizing it's a little awkward.
"So you don't think she told you the truth about why she did it?"
"I don't know... But we were perfectly fine, better than ever, before she decided she wanted to break up with me. It was just weird." He tells me and I feel terrible. Liam is such a sweetheart, he doesn't deserve this.
"That is strange. Well if you ever want to talk, I'm here! I've been through my fair share of breakups and drama with exes." I smile and he laughs.
"Thanks, it means a lot. You know, it's pretty tough trying to get over this without the guys teasing me or the girls getting angry with me. The lads think I'm being to soft and Perrie and Eleanor are mad because they loved Danielle."
"Don't listen to them. I think it is perfectly normal to be upset about this, and it's not your fault." I reassure him. "Have you talked to her since?"
"Nah, if she wanted to break up with me, than I'm not going to waste my time. I think I'm just going to ride solo for a bit." He smiles. "Especially since university is starting this fall. I don't want to be tied down with Dani or anyone. I just want to have a good time."
I tense up when he mentions university. I do not want to talk about this now. Thankfully Harry and Louis walk up to the table and interrupt our conversation.
"Who won?" I ask the two, hopefully Liam will drop this topic.
"Obviously me, babe!" Harry says and sits down to me. He puts his arm around my shoulder as Louis scoots into the booth next to Liam on the other side of the table.
"Oh I let you win." Louis pouts.
"Okay, Lou." Harry laughs. "We should get going, I'm about to pass out from this jet lag." He looks at me and I nod in agreement. I feel like I haven't slept in days.
"You don't want to stay and wait for Zayn and Niall? They really wanted to see you guys." Liam looks at me.
"We'll stop by tomorrow." Harry tells them and gets up from the booth, holding his hand out to me.
"Tell gran I say hi, and we'll see ya tomorrow." Louis says goodbye to Harry.
"Well I guess I'll see you tomorrow?" Liam looks at me as Louis and Harry laugh about something.
"Yeah! And I meant what I said, I'm here to talk if you need me. I know how bad breakups can be." I promise him.
"I will, thanks." He smiles and pulls me in for a hug. "You're pretty cool, Aubrey." He says into my ear.
"You're not too bad yourself. See you tomorrow, Liam." I laugh.
"Alright, let's go Aubrey." Harry clears his throat and I release my grip on Liam.
"See you, Louis!" I smile and give him a quick hug before catching up to Harry.
NotesSo I've decided this story will only have a couple more chapters left because I think it's dragging on a little... idk. A lot of people are unsubscribing so it makes me feel like you guys aren't liking it anymore.
I will hopefully be updating again tomorrow or the next day.
And I just want to thank the people who still subscribe & who have commented... It makes me feel good when you guys have positive feedback! <3
