New In Town

Chasing Pavements

Graduation is next week, and you could say I'm slightly freaking out. I'm sad that high school is ending, but so excited to go to Stanford to start college. My parents are coming home today so they can watch graduation, and I couldn't be happier. I haven't seen them in over a month, and I could really use their parental advice right now.

"Aubrey! I have to go work on the final presentation project with Ryan, but I'll be over for dinner." Harry yells to me while I'm just getting out of the shower.

"Okay! My parents are coming in at 7, so come over around 7:30?" I poke my head out of the bathroom, but he's already gone.

And that's another thing, Harry. Ever since we got back from London, he's been a little distant. I've tried talking to him, but he refuses to admit there's something bothering him. Maybe he's just worried about the end of the summer, just like I am.

I've been keeping in touch with Liam, and I haven't really told Harry. I feel somewhat guilty, but on the
other hand I don't. I'm only keeping it from him because I know he'll flip out if I tell him, and there is nothing going on between Liam and I that he should worry about. We are friends, and honestly, I already feel like he's on of my best friends. He's very similar to me, so it makes it easy.

"Look at my high school graduate!" My mom smiles wide when I see her at the airport.

"Mom, I haven't graduated yet!" I say while she squeezes me in a tight hug.

"I just can't believe my little girl is almost done with high school." She holds me by my shoulders at arms length and looks at me.

"She's right, I feel like it was just yesterday that we dropped you off at kindergarten. We're so proud of you, Aubrey." My dad walks over and pulls me into a bone crushing embrace.

"Well we can reminisce at home, I'm hungry!" I cut the story time short, not only because I'm hungry, but also because I will get super emotional if they keep this up. I swear I saw my mom wipe a tear from her eye already.

"Of course, is Harry coming?" My dad says with a smile. I'm still thankful that he likes Harry so much.

"Yeah, he's going to meet us there, he's working on a project for school right now." I inform them and help carry there bags to my car.

"So before Harry gets here, we gotta talk." My mom sits next to me on the porch and hands me a cup of tea.

"Umm, about what?" I take a sip and look at her confused.

"Everything. How've you been?"

"Oh, I'm fine. Kind of nervous to graduate, but that's about it." I tell her honestly.

"And what about college? Is Harry still going back to London?"

"Yeah... I still don't know how to deal with that." I take another sip and look out at the blue ocean meet the horizon of the pink sky.

"You'll make it work, right? You two have been through a lot together, I know you can make it happen." She laughs. We really have been through a lot together, and she's right, if anyone can make it work-we can.

"I'm just scared. I was thinking-"

"Harry's here! And dinners ready!" I'm cut off by my father from the kitchen.

"We'll talk later, but Aubrey, just take it day by day." Mom smiles and hugs me.

"Hey Harry! How are you?" She greets him with a hug before I can get to him. He kisses me on my cheek, and I think it's because he wants to be a gentleman in front of my parents.

"I'm good Claire, how are you guys?" He asks as we sit down.

"Wonderful now! It's great to be back in California."

The dinner moves on smoothly, and nothing much happens. My dad and Harry end up talking about the Vikings beating the Packers last Sunday while my mom and I clear the table. I feel like I felt back in London over Christmas. It just feels like everyone's happy, and nothing's wrong.

Around midnight is when Harry leaves and I end up falling asleep not long after. Tomorrow is the graduation ceremony and I need my beauty rest!

I wake up at five in the morning, and the sun has barely started to rise. I don't have to be at school for another twelve hours for graduation, but I'm too excited and nervous to sleep. I guess I'll just take a shower and take my time to get ready.

When I remove my clothes and step into the shower, I feel a good amount of stress wash off my body along with the hot water. I'm nervous I'm going to trip while getting my diploma or my nightmare of being late to the ceremony will come true. I just want today to be perfect.

I take extra long in the shower simply because I've got the time, and I wanted to make sure I shaved my legs well. I step out and wrap a large towel around my body and dry my hair with another. I leave the bathroom to go find a bottle of my favorite lotion on my nightstand and my phone is buzzing. Who the hell is calling me at six in the morning?

"Hello?" I answer. I sit on the edge of my bed and start lathering the scented lotion on my freshly shaved legs.

"Hello, Ms. Flynn?" A young man answers.

"This is she, may I ask who's calling?"

"Oh, yes! My apologies Ms. Flynn. This is Daniel Levine over at Stanford. It was brought to my attention that you were receiving the scholarship for our medical school?"

"Yes, that's me." I smile to myself. I still can't wrap my head around that.

"Well congratulations on that! But I have another offer for you, do you have a moment to talk?"

"Uh, yeah." I say while checking the clock. Of course I do, I woke up twelve hours before graduation, I've got nothing but time!

"Perfect. I would like to offer you to join our summer program here at the med school. Most of our pre-med students do this. We would let you move into your dorm early and you will earn a few credits for the courses you take. It's a great opportunity to start learning right away and get right into the college life after high school. And it is an excellent program." He explains.

"That sounds amazing!" Is all I can reply.

"It really is, Ms. Flynn. If you check your email, I've sent you all of the information you will need in order to decide."

"Okay, thank you!"

"Of course. We would love to see your name on the list, just call me back at this number when you decide. And I'll give you until next Monday, only because the spots are limited."

"Mr. Levine?" I ask thinking he may have hung up.

"Yes?" He replies.

"When does this start?"

"In two weeks. I know it's quite abrupt, but most of the participants say they can't wait to start their college career. Hopefully this isn't a problem. I hope I will hear from you before Monday, Ms. Flynn."

"Thank you." I say quietly. "I'll get back to you." I say and hang up.

Holy shit, two weeks? Two weeks! I drop my phone and the lotion bottle and quick pull on some leggings and a tshirt.

I scream as I run down the hall to my parents bedroom. My dad must be working out or something because it's just my mom snoozing in their bed.

"Aubrey, do you realize it's six in the morning? Are you that excited for graduation?" She groans and covers her eyes to shield then from the light.

"Mom! They want me to do a summer program at Stanford!" I jump up next to her.

"That's great sweetie, now let me sleep!"

"I would start school in two weeks." I tell her and she sits back up after laying down.

"Two weeks?"

"Yeah! I'll move into my dorm and start taking classes."

"Wow. That's so soon!"

"I know, but I think I should do it, he said it was a great opportunity." I smile.

"I think you should too, but two weeks? You won't get your summer, Aubrey."

"I know." I tell her, but to be honest, I never thought about it. What am I going to do about Harry? Stanford is three hours away.

"Lets talk about this later." She smiles and opens her arms for a hug. "I'm so proud of you Aubs." She says into my ear.

"I really don't understand how you got so smart, though. Your dad was an idiot, thank god he can play football, but then again, I wasn't the smartest either." We laugh.

"Alright, get some rest mom." I hop off the bed and go back to my room.

I lay on my bed and just imagine what it will be like. I thought I would have the whole summer to prepare myself for college, but it looks like I only have two weeks. I can do this, right? It's what I've always wanted.

Later that night...

"Harry, can we talk?" I whisper in his ear at the dinner table. After the ceremony, we parted ways with our parents and went out with all of our friends to grab something to eat.

"Yeah, what's up?" He flashes me his beautiful smile.

"In private?"

His smile turns into a frown with confusion before he nods.

"Excuse us." I smile at Sophie when she stands up to let us out of the booth.

"Damn Styles, can't wait until later?" Ryan yells as we walk outside. Everyone laughs and Harry rolls his eyes.

"Aubrey, you're kind of scaring me, are your okay?"

"Yeah, more than okay!" I smile, but it's not so convincing.

"Alright... So what is it?"

"I start school in two weeks." I close my eyes and brace myself for his reaction.

"Why so early?"

"I got accepted into a summer program, it's a great opportunity and my parents think I should go for it... I do too."

"That's really great Aubrey." He smiles, I can tell he's not too happy about it, but neither am I. I can't throw this opportunity away though, it'll be a really good experience for me.

"Are you mad?"

"Well yeah. Not at you... I just wish we had more time before school started and we have to... Be away from each other."

"I know, me too, but that's life." I look at him.

"I hope your roommate doesn't mind me coming up every weekend." He smiles a devious grin and pulls me closer to him.

"Harry!" I laugh. I know exactly what he's thinking in that brain of his.

"Let's get back to dinner before they think we're fucking in the bathroom." He lets out a deep chuckle. "Unless you actually want to.. That dress looks hot as hell on you, Aubs."

"Not happening." I smile and walk ahead of him.

That went better than I had thought. I don't know why I thought he would be angry. He's always been supportive of me, so how could he be?

"Okay I just want to call Liam to tell him." I say with out even thinking.

"Liam?" His tone hardens.

"Harry... Yes. He is my friend and I'm going to share my good news with him."

"Alright." He doesn't fight it, thankfully. After he walks into the bathroom, I dial Liam's number.

"Hey Liam!"

"Aubrey, what's up?" He answers with sleep in his voice. Whoops, it's only like three in the morning there.

"Oh my god, Im so sorry! I probably just woke you up!"

"It's okay, what's going on? Is everything with Harry okay?"

I explain to him that I'm starting school in two weeks because of the summer program, and he's really happy for me.

"I'm just nervous, it's so soon." I admit as I walk out of the room and go out onto the porch.

"Don't be, it'll be really great. I wish I could start school that early!" He laughs.

"Yeah, how are things with Danielle?"

"Haven't talked to her. I just need to get to uni and have fun. It's been great so far, not having to worry about someone else... That probably sounds terrible!" He chuckles.

"No, it makes sense."

"But that's just my opinion. It would be too hard for me if we were still together. She's going to some dance school, and I would just worry about her every second. You and Harry are too in love to let that affect you."

"Thanks. We will make it work." I smile to myself. "I'll let you sleep, goodnight Liam."

"Night, Aubs. And congrats!"

"Why did you come out here?" I turn around to see Harry in his sweatpants only.

"I don't know, just kinda wondered out here."

"Come to bed." He simply states and I follow him back in the house.

"It feels weird. I don't feel like we just graduated." I think out loud as we lay down.

"Same. I feel too young... Hey, I may have looked on the Stanford website, and you have a few days off in October for mid term, so you're coming to London."

"We'll see." I smile and turn my back to him.

"Not a question, you're coming." He pulls me to his chest and kisses my cheek.

"You'll come right?" He breaks the silence after a few minutes. He almost sounds hurt, like I was actually serious.

"Of course." I turn back to face him.

"What did you and Liam talk about?"

"Not much, just college talk."

"Oh. He's still not back with Danielle?"

"No, I guess they're really done."

"I see... You know, I never understood what she saw in him anyway. He's kind of a square." He laughs.

"Harry! Liam is a great guy!" I laugh and I feel him tense up. "He's a good friend." I clarify for him.
