Good Intentions ⇼ Luke Hemmings
“Are you mad at me?” Maiko asked as he stepped into our flat.
“No.” I mumbled as he joined me in the kitchen. “It was just… A really long day.” I sighed, resuming my cooking.
“Anything interesting happen?” He asked, pecking my cheek as he walked past me to the fridge.
“No.” I lied, ignoring him as he fished a beer out and popped it open.
“What are you making?”
“Pasta.” Maiko met me by the stove, holding my waist as he sipped his beer.
“Why are you in such a bad mood?” Maiko sighed, setting his head on my shoulder. He essentially towered over me. Not as much as Luke does, but nonetheless.
“I’m not.” I shrugged him off, only for him to grab me again.
“Yes you are.” He taunted. “What’s wrong?” I pushed him away.
“I don’t want to talk about it.” I refused, carrying the heavy pot to drain.
As Maiko and I ate dinner silently, he pressed the issue once more.
“See?” He sighed, angrily. “This is why we always have problems! You don’t fucking talk to me.” He grumbled, staring at me.
“No, Maiko.” I refused. “We have problems because you don’t appreciate me-” He cut me off.
“Of course I appreciate you, Romina-”
“No! No you don’t!” I rejected, cutting him off. “I came to you today, Maiko! I came to you and I apologized.” I couldn’t help myself from sniffling as tears pricked my eyes. “And all you did was bring up Luke! I was trying to tell you how sorry I am and how much I-I care about you and all you did was talk about him!” I bit my lip, trying my best to hold back my tears.
“I brought him up because it still worries me. It shouldn’t worry me! Luke was-” Again I cut him off.
“How dare you bring him up! He doesn’t matter, he-”
“No, Romina, he does matter! He matters more than me!” I gasped.
“Don’t fucking say that, Maiko! How dare you!” He scoffed.
“How dare me?” He asked. “How dare me? How dare you! How dare you for keeping every fucking thing to yourself! How dare you for not being here when I needed you! How dare you for not doing the things you would do if you loved me! How dare you for still loving Luke! How dare me? How dare you!” That’s when I lost it, tears fell down my cheeks.
“Fuck you, Maiko!” I yelled, standing up and slamming my hands on the table. “I came to you today to tell you that despite the fact that I’ve been distant, that I’m sure of it now, I love you!” I sobbed. “But I guess that’s not enough, I must love Luke more.” Before he could respond, I stormed out of our flat and walked to Kaylee’s.
“He said all that?” Kaylee asked as we sat on her bed, cross-legged(both dressed in her pajamas, as I had borrowed a pair), like we did when we were in high school. I nodded slowly, sipping the tea that Ashton had made us. He took Josi to the park in order to give Kaylee and I some time alone, as I was in hysterics when I reached their door. “That’s horrible.” She sighed. “I can’t believe he said you weren’t there for him.” I nodded, agreeing silently as I stared into the cup. “I can’t believe he brought up Luke again.” I bit my lip.
“I can’t believe I told him I love him.” This time, Kaylee nodded, and I couldn’t help but feel like I was about to cry again. “Kay, I need to tell you something.” I rasped. “I did something really bad, and I really regret it. But I don’t think I can get out of this one, it’s been haunting me.” Kaylee grabbed my hand, lightly squeezing it to reassure me that it was okay to talk to her.
“You slept with Luke.” Kaylee assumed after a long while of silence while I tried to find the words to say. All I could do was nod.
“Christmas.” I whispered, my voice breaking. “And we spent new year’s together. He keeps talking about it and I don’t know what to do because he’s so damn persistent and he won’t let it go. I know I don’t love him anymore, but I don’t love Maiko either.” I began to cry for what felt like the millionth time today. “I just want to be alone. I want to be alone forever. No boys, no lovers, nothing. Simple me, that’s all I want.” Kaylee nodded as if she completely understood, and I could see how she would—considering the fact that she had always been the one to get too much attention from boys.
“Are you going to breakup with Maiko, then?” She inquired, putting me to thought.
“I can’t.” I cried. “I’m stuck in the middle—between Maiko and Luke, and I could very well get Luke back, isn’t that what I’ve wanted all these years? But I can’t very well go and hurt Maiko. Kaylee I don’t know what to do.” In a friendly gesture, she kissed my forehead and hugged me tightly before urging me to lie down and covering me with the heavy duvet.
“Take some time for yourself, Rom. Don’t think about either of them, stay with me—here, and stay away from the boys. You need some time for yourself and yourself only, okay baby?” I smiled weakly, nodding and appreciating the pet name. “Go to sleep.” She brushed my short, dark brown hair out of my face and kissed my forehead once more. “I’ll be here when you wake up.” She whispered, and with that, I dozed off, grateful that I have the greatest best friend a girl could have.
