~5~ (Thursday, September 6, 2012; 12:31 PM)
Mom just sat in her chair in the living room. She was facing out the window, staring at the driveway. With her bottle of scotch in her hands, I assumed she was waiting for Luke to just walk up the driveway.
I felt like I had to take care of her too, after Dad left. After he left without even bothering to say goodbye to either Luke or me.
He tried to contact us a few times. I ignored any outreach he attempted to make towards me. I don’t know for certain how much contact Luke had with him.
I fixed her a sandwich and brought it over to her.
“Here’s some lunch, Mom.” I said as I put the plate next to her, along with a glass of water.
“I’m not hungry.” Mom said as she took another swig from the bottle.
“Jack.” Mom said a little firmer, “No.”
“You have to eat!” I pleaded.
Mom looked at me and gently put her hand on my cheek. “Thank you so much for making this for me.”
“For me, Mom.” I said looking her straight in the eye. “Please eat, and please drink this water.”
I was getting quite concerned about my mother getting malnourished, but more importantly, dehydrated.
Mom gave a weak smile. “Okay.” She picked up the glass of water and took a sip, followed by a bite of the sandwich.
“I’m going to the print shop to print missing posters.” I said. “And I’ll go around town this afternoon putting them up.”
“Thank you.” Mom said.
I was about to walk out of the house when I stopped by the doorway, and let out a tear. I needed to be strong, but I needed someone that I could lean on.
And I didn't have that someone.
Y'all I hope you're enjoying this!
